Live Video Call Tips: Look Better, Sound Better, Connect Better

Camera: eye level or slightly above

Prop your phone so the lens sits at eye level. Below eye level is the unflattering angle every laptop defaults to; well above feels like a surveillance van. Eye level reads as "talking to you". And look at the lens — not your own preview — when you say something that matters.

Light: face the brightest thing in the room

Sit facing a window in daytime, or put a lamp behind your screen at night. Overhead-only light digs shadows under your eyes; light behind you turns you into a silhouette. One warm lamp at face height is the cheapest glow-up that exists.

Sound: quiet beats expensive

People forgive average video and abandon calls over bad audio. Close the window, kill the fan, use any wired or bluetooth earphones — the mic on cheap earbuds still beats a phone speaker bouncing echo around a tiled room.

Connection: three checks before you tap call

• Wi-Fi bars full, or switch to mobile data if your router is across the flat.
• Close the six apps you forgot were open — video eats memory.
• Charge above 30%. Low-power mode throttles cameras on most phones.

Pacing: the part nobody practises

Live video has a half-second delay that swallows quick banter. Leave a beat after she finishes — it reads as attentiveness, not slowness. And end while the call is still fun: "this was great, same time tomorrow?" is a far better closer than letting the energy fade to goodbye.
